International Day for Biological Diversity is celebrated annually on May 22. This holiday was established by the UN in 1993 to draw attention to the importance of preserving biological diversity on the planet and to remind people of the need to take measures to protect ecosystems and species that are under threat of extinction.

Problems of Biodiversity
Today, biological diversity is under threat. The main causes of biodiversity loss include:

Habitat destruction. Massive deforestation, urbanization and expansion of agricultural lands lead to the destruction of ecosystems, depriving many species of their natural habitat.

Pollution. Chemicals, plastic waste, oil spills and other pollutants have a devastating effect on ecosystems and wildlife.

Climate change. Rising temperatures on the planet, changing precipitation levels and increasing frequency of natural disasters negatively affect ecosystems, depriving species of their usual living conditions.

Overuse of natural resources. Fishing, hunting, mining and agriculture are often unsustainable and can lead to resource depletion.

Invasive species. The introduction of species that are not native to a particular ecosystem can suppress or eliminate native species, upsetting the ecosystem's balance.

Events and initiatives
Educational programs. Schools, universities and research institutions hold lectures, seminars and discussions on the importance of biological diversity.

Exhibitions and events. Museums, nature reserves and botanical gardens organize special exhibitions and events where visitors can learn more about different species of plants and animals, as well as measures to protect them.

Volunteer events. Events are organized to plant trees, clean up water bodies, restore ecosystems, where people can directly participate in nature conservation.

International cooperation. The UN and other international organizations are developing programs to protect biodiversity, including the Convention on Biological Diversity, which is an international treaty aimed at protecting ecosystems and species.
